About Our Founder
Our founder, Rachell Williams, has always had a passion for jewelry design. And, when it came to adornment, she always "marched to the beat of her own drum." MDI Gemstones began by selling designs in beauty salons in her local area to support her daughter while she was in college. Eventually, she developed a following and was asked by one Salon Owner if she had more "elaborate pieces." This sprung into experimenting and incorporating all metals in design. Rachell subsequently found that what she liked to do had now become a "passion."
Passion
When "design" becomes "passion" it is no longer work but defines who you are. I'm also thankful to my Dad who was an artist. And, because of him and his spirit that lives within me, I uniquely embrace gemstones and jewelry design and understand that it too is one of the truest art forms. My Daughter and I Gemstone Designs also incorporates vintage pieces and vintage thought in some of our work.
Paying Homage to Africa
I pay homage to the great African American jewelry designer Art Smith who inspires me in design. I also have a love of Egyptian and African motif as well. You will find that not only do we incorporate semi-precious and precious stones in our designs but also mixed-media, fibers and metals. It is my hope that you enjoy MDI Gemstones' designs as much as I love creating them.
